Ask an Author Week #10: Kelley Heckart

Question:   What is the "coolest" or most interesting thing that has happened to you since becoming a published author?

Kelley Heckart: I have to say that I thought being an author would be way more boring than when I played in an all-girl hard rock band, but I have met just as many weird and interesting people at my book signings. One guy I remember talked non-stop about the earth's magnetic core and aliens. He made my head spin. The coolest thing that happened was at a book signing last year. People who had read my first book came up to me and said they had to buy my next book. It was a great feeling.

Ask an Author Week #9: Kelley Heckart

Question:  What is your favorite "guilty" pleasure and why?

Kelley Heckart: Cinnabons. They are so sweet and sticky. I can't eat them because the last time I allowed myself to fall to temptation, I gained a ton of weight. I have to stay away from them.

Ask an Author Week #8: Kelley Heckart

Question: If you could meet any mythological or legendary creature/person, who would they be and why?

Kelley Heckart: King Arthur. I am interested in that time period and could finally put to rest all the arguments about him and whether he was a real person or not. I also have a thing for men with big swords and chain mail. Yummy.

Kelley Heckart: Ann Rice. I think she is an interesting person and she grew up in one of the most mysterious cities in the U.S.—New Orleans.

Ask an Author Week #6: Kelley Heckart

Question: What genre (if any) have you always dreamed of writing but haven't found the time and/or inspiration to write?

Kelley Heckart: I want to write a fantasy in a made up world, maybe an urban fantasy in a post-apocalyptic world.

Ask An Author Week #5: Kelley Heckart

Question: What is your favorite Season to write in and why?

Kelley Heckart: (As in to sit down and write your stories) Fall. I love fall because it is the most mysterious of the seasons to me. The shadows deepen, forming strange patterns and the scent of wood smoke lingers in the air. It inspires me to write about conflict and long ago places where otherworldly creatures walk amongst the spear-like shadows of twilight.

Ask An Author Week #3: Kelley Heckart

Question: If you could meet anyone of your characters in person, who would it be and why?

Kelley Heckart: Nemu. She is my heroine from Of Water and Dragons, Ravenwolf and the soon to be released—Night's Daughter. She is a half-human, half-water faery (Ashray) and she has lived for at least a thousand years. She has had to make some difficult choices in her long life and she is not flawless, having had a dark past and the opportunity to redeem herself. I think she would have words of wisdom for me and be a fascinating character to have a conversation with.

Kelley Heckart: I would want to travel back to the Dark Ages in Scotland so I could see first hand what really happened and to meet the mysterious Picts.

Ask An Author Week #1: Kelley Heckart

Question: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have three books with which to read for five years, which three books would you take and why?

Kelley Heckart: The Mabinogion by Evangeline Walton—this is the best interpretation of the Welsh legends told in The Mabinogion and her writing is enchanting. I can read this book over and over again. Another favorite book of mine is The Mists of Avalon. I love the way Marion Zimmer Bradley told the tale of King Arthur through the eyes of the women around him. Another favorite of mine is Interview With The Vampire. Ann Rice changed the face of vampire tales with this novel and I still think it is the best of all the modern vampire novels.
