Ask An Author Week #1: Michelle Beattie

Question: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have three books with which to read for five years, which three books would you take and why?

Michelle Beattie: Another Dawn and Where There's Smoke by Sandra Brown, also Come Spring by Jill Marie Landis. I'd choose these books because, though old, made the biggest impression on me when I was just starting to read romances. They got me hooked on the genre andinspired me to write.

I live in Alberta Canada, in an off-grid house run completely by solar power. I began writing shortly after coming back from my honeymoon.
I originally wrote westerns but fell in love with Pirates of the Caribbean and wrote my own pirate story, which became the first book I ever sold.

hi and welcome Michelle; hi to a fellow Canadian. I, too, love Sandra Brown's writing. I especially like the Texas Trilogy she wrote. I love Westerns! Do you think you will go back to writing some? Thanks.

    Robyn,

Hello fellow Canadian! I too like the Texas trilogy, with Lucky being my favorite.
I wrote westerns when they weren't selling, now that they are again I hope to write many more once the pirates series is finished.

    Dear Arcane

What inspired me to write was reading other novels, both good and bad, and thinking "I'd have done it differently." I would re-create the scenes in my head until finally I thought why don't I just do my own?

WOW!!! Your house is run completely by solar power,That sounds very Eco-Friendly. How different is it from living in a non solar powered one??

    Hi Afshan!

I hope you read What a Pirate Desires, it's gotten great reviews from most, including Publisher's Weekly!

As for living in a solar house, it's not much different, just takes more planning ahead. I try to do my laundry on sunny days and use a clothesline or drying racks for most of it. I bake when it's sunny too. If I need hot water (electric hot water tank) I again wait for the sun to come up or in the winter, we start a generator. We have plans for 3 wind turbines also and once that gets going, we shouldn't need a generator at all.

You hooked me with wanting books by Sandra Brown and "Come Spring" (one of my favorites too) by Jill Marie Landis. Your "Romancing the Pirate" is going to be a fun read, I am sure.
