Now that we're in to December...I thought I'd share with you, the FIRST ever excerpt of Lord of Thieves from Chapter One...

Chapter One

1209, Nottinghamshire

I’m going to die this day.

Merrion squeezed her eyes shut as she stumbled from the darkened bowels of Laxton Castle into the bright, piercing sunlight. She stood on quaking limbs, her body weak and trembling as she waited for the harsh light to recede. Hands as hard as iron manacles gripped her arms, holding her upright. She gasped as they half dragged, half walked her into the welcoming morn. She had to bite her bottom lip to keep from crying out— her shoulders ached with each jarring movement.

How long was she chained in the dungeon, her arms stretched above her until she feared they would rip from the sockets? It could have been weeks or months in that place of eternal night.

Merrion was jerked to a halt, her knees giving way. She would have crumpled to the ground in a ragged heap, but the guards yanked her to her feet. She groaned, her body aching from head to toe. By dint of sheer will, she slowly straightened. She pried her eyes open and stared at her surroundings, and wished she hadn’t.

The massive wall of the inner bailey rose before her, twenty five feet high, and of solid stone. The gate tower, looming above the wall, glared down at her with its dark windows. Gripped by desperation, her gaze darted to the portcullis, but something tall and foreboding blocked her view.

Merrion’s eyes widened, her breath quickened, as a chill slithered down her spine.

Constructed in the centre of the bailey was a gibbet. The buttercolored wood looked freshly hewn in the golden dawn. And hanging from the elevated beam, was a thick coiled rope swinging gently in the spring breeze.

Merrion could not have been more horrified had a hooded executioner hefting a mighty axe been awaiting her. Her pulse raced as terror squeezed her heart. Tears rose to sting her eyes.

I am going to die this day.

There could be no denying the truth.

She wanted to scream, to rage at the heavens, but she would not give her brother-in-law the satisfaction of knowing her fright. Gathering the tattered shreds of her courage, she swallowed the cry threatening to erupt from her throat. She pushed back her panic and straightened her spine. If she was going to die this day, she would do so with honor and dignity— just as her father had taught her.

A strange noise reached her, like the roar of the waves battering the White Cliffs of Dover. She gazed past the gibbet and gasped.

A solid wall of humanity filled the bailey, from the gate tower to the gibbet. Men, women, and children had gathered for the grand spectacle of a high-born lady swinging from the noose. Merrion watched in disbelief as vendors moved through the throng with ale carts, roasted meats and baked bread. They peddled their wares in their loud sing-song voices.

Gisbourne must have invited the serfs and villagers from the surrounding Hundreds to watch her die.

Dread crept past her courage, freezing her blood. I cannot die like this. I cannot! Terrified, she shrank back against her captors. She’d rather starve to death in the dungeons than to suffer this.

“All will be well soon, milady,” a voice whispered soothingly in her ear.

Aye, she would be dead!

Merrion closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath, calming the frantic patter of her heart. So she would suffer a few moments of humiliation and pain. At least she would no longer know torment at the hands of her brother-in-law. Nor would she be a pawn of the King.

Composed, she opened her eyes and gazed above the forbidding wall to the blue horizon. Despite her imminent demise, Merrion acknowledged it was one of loveliest sunrises she’d ever seen. The sweeping gold and red was slowly giving way to the deeper blue of day as clouds of white fluff lazily meandered across the great expanse. A gentle spring breeze wafted over her like a tender caress, teasing the tendrils at her temple. A wistful smile touched her lips when she spotted a hawk gliding across the sky. If only she could fly as the bird, then she too could escape her earthly bonds. She inhaled deeply of the fresh air, savoring it. It was the first she’d had in a long time. A strange peace of acceptance washed over her.

At least it was a nice day to die...

The True Worth of a Man...

With the recent death of my father, things of have changed for me…it’s more than just losing a parent and a best friend, something inside of me is changing, becoming more adult. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve been an adult for years, but my way of thinking is evolving. You really can’t understand unless you’ve lost a parent.

But what I’ve been thinking about is the true value of a person…

This came to me after I wrote my father’s obituary. What was my father’s worth, and how does one judge one’s value?

In this so-called modern society, it seems everyone is judged by two things: fame and wealth.

I’ve come to the realization that money is worthless.

Now before you go call the rubber room and have me hauled away, hear me out.

I’m not one of those people who think money is the root of all evil, but nor do I think it is the center of the universe.

I admit it, I like money. It’s great for paying the bills, it makes the financial world go round, and in this society that we live in, it helps you live life the way you want to.

But I’ve come to realize that it doesn’t matter how much your coffers are over flowing with gold, it is worthless…because in the end, when you die, you cannot take it with you. Nor will you be remembered for said wealth. Sure you might get a brief mention on the news, but very quickly your memory will fade away.

Fame isn’t much better in my opinion. In fact, from what I’ve seen, it’s more of a detriment then a blessing. And yet everyone wants to be famous. But what will fame get you? An extra 20 minutes in the news before you’re replaced by the next news story?

No, it is not fame or wealth that defines a man…it is his deeds.

What you do with your life and how you live it, is how people will remember you.

Me and my mother have been getting a lot of condolences from friends and acquaintances…and on two separate occasions people actually said the following to my Mom when they found out about my father’s death.

“The universe was a better place when Max was in it…”

I admit, I feel the same way--he was my Dad--but to have others say such a thing says a lot about who my father was as a man and the weight of his deeds.

I think that if you can make the world around you (no matter how big or small you define that world) a better place while you’re in it, then you will always be remembered by those who know and love you.

Let deeds define you, not wealth or fame.

I've been dying to buy a souvenir from the Olympic Games, because they have been absolutely amazing! Watched the Opening Ceremonies with my Mom in surround sound (it was almost like being there...a BIG almost...LOL), and the Canadian Athletes have also been amazing...

The whole world seems to be celebrating this beautiful and inspiring country right along with us.

And since it's the Canada vs USA Hockey Game tonight, I'd thought I would actually splurge (hard for me to do) and buy this replica jersey to watch the game in...and what happens? Canada loses 3 to 5... *shakes head*

Oh the humanity! (LOL) But do not despair! Canada has a resilient spirit--never say die--and I know our Men's hockey team will KICK BUTT and will end up playing for Gold... *crosses fingers*

Regardless of what happens...I have to say the level of pride I feel, not only in our athletes, but in Canada as a nation, has never been stronger. This is a beautiful country and I'm so proud to be living in it! Though my Dad wasn't born here, I know he loved it too...

So GO TEAM CANADA...GO!

How Do You Say Good-bye?

January 21, 2010 is a date which will live forever in my heart…not because it is the day I got my first contract, or I met a special friend, or when I brought my German Shepherd home…but because my father, E. Max Hyatt, died.

He’d been suffering from Unstable Angina for about two weeks. And no, he wasn’t in the hospital. He didn’t like doctors and hospitals—not that I can blame him—he wanted to be with those he loved—his family.

I think the saddest thing of all, is he knew he was dying. For over a year he’d been trying to prepare me, saying things like “I’m not going to be around forever” and “You’ll have to take over when I’m gone.” Near the end, he told me point blank that something was trying to kill him inside. But I just didn’t believe it.

As children, we tend to think our fathers are invincible…and why not? They carry you on their shoulder when you’re little. They are so tall and proud when you do good, and a thunderstorm when you’re bad. A father’s respect is earned…not given unconditionally. They have a kind of wisdom not to be found anywhere else…and they seem to be able to take care any situation which might arise.

I too thought my father was invincible…he’d always been there for me through the good times and the bad. Why wouldn’t he be around for another twenty or forty years?

Around 6pm that night, my father called me into the living room. I knew he wasn’t doing well, he’d been very weak all day, barely able to move from the living room to the bed room without it costing him chest pain (in our tiny house). But still...

He told me to call the ambulance or he was going to die this night. I began to cry and so did he. We hugged each other. I asked him if he was sure, because I knew the VERY last thing he wanted was to go to a hospital and die among strangers. He told me to call.

So I did.

Strangely, I do not remember my thoughts as we waited, I think I was trying really hard keep strong and not fall apart when my father needed me most. The local Fire Department came first, two really great guys who I cannot thank enough for the way they treated my father, who was so very scared. Giving him the care, understanding and dignity he deserved. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for being there for us.

Then the ambulance came. Unfortunately, at the time, the ambulance drivers were on strike, and I don’t know if this is the cause for it, but I found the paramedics to be rude and cold as ice. I was so upset with them (and still am) for the way they treated my Dad, but of course I didn’t say anything, because my Dad came first!

I remember watching them as they helped him out of the house and down the stairs so he could get on the gurney. The way they strapped him in, jerking hard on the belts, it was like they were treating him like a piece of meat! I’ll never forget the scared look in my father’s eyes as he lay there at their mercy. Seeing this, I reached out and squeezed his slippered toe. He looked up at me, as if coming back to himself, and nodded. He knew I was there, that there was someone in this group of strangers who loved him…at least, I hope that’s what he was thinking.

I watched as they wheeled him to the ambulance and put him inside…

The doors closed.

And the ambulance drove away.

That was the last time I saw my father alive.

I cannot begin to describe how helpless I felt, how angry that I could not go with him. I had to stay behind to look after my dog (who’s never been alone) and the cats and the house…

But I let strangers take my father away, I didn’t go with him…it is a regret I will live with for the rest of my life...

Of course I called my mother, who left work and drove to the hospital many miles away. I will not bore you with the endless phone calls, the countless hours I paced waiting for my father to come home, waiting for my mother to tell me everything was alright.

But everything was not alright.

Every drug they gave him only kept the pain away temporarily. They had him on a respirator and pain killers, and who knows what else. I honestly don’t think I could have handled seeing my father like that half as well as my Mom did. She was so very brave to face that and not fall apart.

Finally, they decided that the only thing that would save him, was to fly him via helicopter to Victoria (Capital of British Columbia) for emergency surgery. Turns out, he'd had a continuous heart-attack for the last two days, and as a result, his heart was horribly damaged.

So my Mom said yes, and she waited in the car, giving me a play by play over the phone as we waited for my father to take off. And we would be seeing my father the next day in Victoria, no matter how long the drive…

But something strange happened ten minutes after they wheeled my father’s gurney and all the equipment to the helicopter…the ambulance pulled up and took a bunch of the equipment and a gurney back. My Mom didn’t have the best vantage point, so she really couldn’t see what was happening. Neither one of us had a clue what it really meant…

So, once the helicopter took off, my Mom, exhausted and distraught, drove home.

Five minutes before she arrived there was a knock on the front door.

I’ve seen these scenes in movies, read them in books, but you don’t really know the truth of it, until you open the door, and there is an RCMP Officer (police) standing on your door step. And before he could say to me... "Ms. Hyatt, I have some terrible news, your husband is dead…" my stomach dropped out and I clapped a hand over my mouth and tears came gushing. (Yes, he said husband, I corrected him of course.)

Never, never, never would I wish that moment even upon my worst enemies!

Turns out, my father died on the way to the helicopter, from a massive heart attack. They tried to revive him in the helicopter, but of course, it was too late.

I’m glad my mother didn’t know then, she would not have been able to drive home under her own will power. She called only moments before she came home, and I had to tell her everything was fine with a policeman and a counsellor sitting in our living room.

In the days and weeks since my father’s passing, I’ve thought about the different things I could have said to him in those last moments before the ambulance came…

I’m sorry Dad for being so damn argumentative all the time.

I wish I’d been a better daughter; I tried to do my best.

Thank you for always being there for me, even when I didn’t want your help or advice.

I would not be the person who am today without you.

You were right, Dad! (because my father was always right--about the good and the bad)

I love you, Dad.

And now that my father is gone, I would like to say:

I wish I’d known how irrevocably my life would change with your passing. Had I known, I would have paid a little more attention to your astounding wisdom, I would have cherished each moment together like it was our last. I do know one thing Dad, I will live life to the fullest and to the best of my abilities which you have given me.

I will live it with passion, compassion, wisdom and honour, that is my pledge to you.

How do you say good-bye to your father, your best friend?

You don’t. Instead, you keep him in your heart, and your thoughts, and each day you live—you live a part of it for him.

There is one other person I would like to thank…William—for allowing me to lean on you in those first terrible days. I don’t think you realize how very important it was for me to be able to share with you my anguish when I could not share it with my mother who was suffering just as greatly. I know you have suffered much yourself, and you didn’t need another’s, but from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. And I hope to make it up to you in the very near future…I don’t think I could have handled those dark days as well without you...

A note on the photos...I took them all (my father was a professional photographer for many years, and yes he taught me that too). He loved hamming it up for the camera... He was funny; wise; one of the most intelligent and aware men I've ever known; simple; complicated; often times misjudged (because he looked so rough); he hated injustice; sympathized with others' pain; and was honest to a fault...but above all, he was my Dad.

E.B. “Max” Hyatt
1948-2010

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of E. Max Hyatt, born September 5, 1948 in Lynwood, California. Max passed away suddenly on the night of January 21, 2010 at NRH. He is survived by his wife, Janice, and his daughter, Ingela F. Hyatt, as well as four cats, a giant German Shepherd and a plethora of fish—all who love him very much.

After serving four years in the Vietnam War, Max came to Canada, where he met his future wife, Janice, in 1970 in Toronto, Ontario. Having a passion for life and a zeal for knowledge, Max dragged his family all over Canada—living in a great many places—before finally settling in the mid-Vancouver Island area in 1983. It was not long after that he and his wife became the managers of Surfside RV Park—a renowned party park at the time—turning Surfside around and making it a family campground with a good reputation. During this time, he opened up California Care Car—a car detailing business—and was looking into investment opportunities. However, at the age of 40, he suffered a heart attack, which led to Max's semi-retirement and his new job—taxing his daughter around town.

On January 25, 2008, Max suffered a stroke which left him partly paralyzed on the right side of his body. Though he eventually had an 90% recovery, he continuously struggled with the various medical conditions which were caused by the stroke. But Max was a fighter, right up to the end.

Though a man of great wisdom—and often suffered for it—E. Max Hyatt lived life to the fullest...and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

All undone is no one though at
death's door he lie: some with good
sons are blessed, and some with kinsmen, or with
coffers full, and some with deeds well-done.

I’m very excited today because I'm holding my very first Romantic Ramblings Interview with Historical Romance Author, Blythe Gifford. Blythe exploded onto the romance scene back in 2004 with her debut novel, The Knave and The Maiden which received rave reviews. Today, we’re celebrating Blythe’s fourth book, In the Master’s Bed with an interview and contest! So grab yourself a cup of java, sit back and enjoy…

Ingela: Welcome Blythe, to the Romantic Ramblings blog. Can you tell us about your latest Harlequin Historical, In The Master's Bed?

Blythe Gifford: It’s a medieval romance featuring a heroine born on the wrong side of the royal blanket, the sister from my previous release The HARLOT’S DAUGHTER. She runs away from home, disguised as a man, to study at the university, where women are forbidden. There, she meets a man who, for the first time, makes her want to be a woman. But what will happen when he discovers her secret and she’s discovered IN The MASTER’S BED?

Ingela: What inspired you to write a romance in the fourteenth Century England?

Blythe Gifford: In junior high school, I read Katherine, by Anya Seton. It’s the story of a lifelong love affair between John of Gaunt, a son of Edward III, fourteenth century English monarch, and Katherine Swynford. They had four children together and in a happily-ever-after moment, they finally married late in life. Their children were legitimized and in just a few generations, their descendents sat on the English throne. It sparked my interest in fourteenth century England and the royal family, particularly the behind-the-throne stories. I subsequently put together my own royal family tree, complete with all the mistresses and bastards I could find. And I’m writing stories of royal bastards today!

Beyond that, I like to write about turbulent times and the fourteenth century has it all: plagues, wars, political intrigue, religious and economic upheavals. My characters grapple with a changing world, just as we do. There’s always something coming to test their mettle.

Ingela: What made you decided to become a writer? Is writing your "first love" or is it something you "fell into?"

Blythe Gifford: After many years in public relations, advertising, and marketing, I started writing seriously after a corporate layoff. Ten years and one layoff later, I was an “overnight success.” That’s when I sold my Golden Heart finalist manuscript to Harlequin.
But the truth is, I’ve been a writer all my life. I started to write (and illustrate) my first historical novel when I was ten. (I have since given up illustration!)

Ingela: So what's in store for you now? What book are you currently inspired to write?

Blythe Gifford: I’m just finishing revisions on my next book about a fourteenth century royal bastard, which will be released next year by Harlequin Historical. (Date and title still to be determined!) This time, I’ve written my first Scottish set story. I’ll be interested to see what readers think about my trip across the border!

Ingela: And now for some fun questions... ;) If you could travel back in time for a month long vacation, which Era would you visit and why?

Blythe Gifford: Well, I’d have to say the fourteenth century. It would be interesting to see whether I got it right. But it might not feel like much of a vacation! And I’d want a time travel guarantee that I wouldn’t catch from the plague, or be have to ride to war or get on the king’s bad side. If any of those happened, I might not make it back!

Ingela: If you could meet anyone of your characters in person, who would it be and why?

Blythe Gifford: The one I would like to meet is a character in my books, but also a real person. Jane, the heroine of IN The MASTER’S BED, and Solay, the heroine of The HARLOT’S DAUGHTER, were inspired by real people: the daughters of Alice Perrers, the notorious mistress of Edward III. If you Google Alice, “notorious” is the nicest word that pops up. The list includes greedy, unscrupulous, shrewd, venal, shameless, and rapacious! But in creating her as a character, and a mother, I developed my own take on her life and motives. In twenty-first century hindsight, I think she was scandalous because she exceeded the boundaries set for a mistress in her age. Had she been a man, she would have been admired for her wealth and power. I’d like to know whether I’m right.

Ingela: If you could meet any author in the world (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Blythe Gifford: Oh, I could make a list! But let me give the “dead” answer. I’d love to meet Anya Seton so I could tell her how her book had influenced my life. I did get to do the second best thing. I met her granddaughter at a conference earlier this year. That was a real thrill, I have to say. I got goose bumps!

Ingela: What is your favorite "guilty" pleasure and why?

Blythe Gifford: Only one? I’m a fan of “Dancing With the Stars” and I’m really looking forward to having it back on air next week!

Ingela: What is the "coolest" or most interesting thing that has happened to you since becoming a published author?

Blythe Gifford: Actually, just being a published author is pretty cool! And hearing from a reader who loved the book is the best thing ever. But my favorite event was having my first book, The KNAVE AND The MAIDEN, named the book club selection of my hometown library. I visited with the group after they had read the book and got to hear their perceptions and fill them in on some of the flotsam and jetsam of inspiration that went into the story. That was wonderful enough, but while I was there, I kept remembering myself as a little girl, haunting the shelves and taking home stacks of books to read. It is still amazing and wonderful to think that that little girl grew up to write books!

Blythe Gifford: I’d like to thank you for having me, Ingela. I know you are a fellow medieval lover! And I’d love to hear your blog readers tell us what they are reading right now. A copy of IN The MASTER’S BED will go to one lucky commenter.

Lara Adrian's Kiss of Midnight is a provocative thrill ride that sucks you into a dark world of hot vampires and dangerous passions. A thousand years old, Lucan takes his duties to the Order very seriously and the last thing he wants is to get involved with a human female. Even if that female happens to be one of the most stunning and alluring women he's met in a very long tome. In fact, the harder he tries to the resist her, the more he wants her, which is enough to drive this controlled warrior mad. Gabrielle has no idea who and what she truly is, only that she finds Lucan irresistible in a way she's never felt before. And when she discovers he's a vampire and she's suppose to bond with one of his kind, her world is turned upside down and inside out. I found both Lucan and Gabrielle to be deeply complex and compelling characters tortured by pasts they cannot change yet refuse to hide from. Lucan is one hot alpha vampire who's seen too much. He doesn't realize what he has with Gabrielle until it's almost too late. And Gabrielle is his perfect mate: strong, intelligent, courageous, and yet tender of heart. I loved watching these two characters grow and discover a future they could have together. I think Ms. Adrian has created a unique and dynamic world of vampires, one which I can't wait to visit again in the next book in the Midnight Breed series.

Revisiting the Keeper Shelf: Lady of Conquest by Teresa Medeiros

Recently, I signed up with GoodRead's author program and I wanted to fill out my “book shelves.” So I decided to add a new shelf to the list: the keeper shelf.

Now my personal keeper shelf at home consists of some five hundred books, and yes, I've read them all. Some I read only once, and loved them so much I knew I had to keep them. Some I've read multiple times and every time it's a joy to read.

Such is the case with Lady of Conquest by Teresa Medeiros. It was my introduction to Ms. Medeiros extraordinary writing and I instantly fell in love with the book. I decided to add it to the keeper shelf on GoodReads (along with a plethora of Teresa's other books). As I was writing a vague review on the book, I realized I hadn't read it in quite a few years and decided to read it again.

Conn of the Hundred Battles was the first king of Ireland, known then as the Isle of Erin, who united all the smaller kingdoms under one High-King---himself. But all is not well in Conn's kingdom. A giant is killing the Fianna, his elite warriors, and now it is up to Conn himself to destroy the beast. But what Conn finds instead is an orphaned girl with the deadly skills of a warrior. A girl injured by Conn's own sword—when Conn has sworn gentleness to all women. But there is nothing gentle about the lovely waif, even though she is dying from the wound.

Gelina O Monaghan wanted only one thing, vengeance! Vengeance against the man who had her mother and father killed. Vengeance against the one who destroyed her life. That is why she and her brother, Rodney, created the “giant” to kill Conn's men. Why Gelina spent years honing her skills until she was as good as any of the Fianna. But when the moment comes to kill Conn, he turns out to the better warrior. And when he discovers who she is, she is sure he means to kill her, if not use her cruelly as Rodney has warned her. But instead, Conn treats her with kindness, he returns her ackward kisses and tries to heal her wounds. In fact, once Gelina swears featly to him, he protects her by claiming to his people that he killed the Giant and rescued Gelina from it's clutches.

Conn doesn't know what to make of Gelina. He is pained by the fact he indirectly caused her family's death, but then, her father did lie and betray him. It was justice, such as Gelina and her brother had been seeking. But with her brother gone, and with no one else for her to turn to, Conn decides to make her his foster daughter. Needing to keep her close and protect her. But what Conn refuses to acknowledge is the growing feelings he has for her.

Despite everything Rodney told her about Conn, Gelina begins to realize that beneath the battle scared king, is a good and kind man who stirs her heart and fills her days with joy. And though Conn seeks to give her the childhood she lost, what he does not seem to realize, is that Gelina is no longer a child, but growing into a woman, with the wants and desire as such. And much to her dismay, realizes she has deep feelings for Conn.

Betrayed by one of his own men, Conn is sold into slavery to the Romans and returns to Erin a year later to discover his waif has grown into a beautiful young woman. And stirs inside of him a gut deep longing for her. But a part him refuses to see her as the woman she has become, and cannot forget the fact Gelina is his foster daughter.

Faced with more betrayals and dark secrets, Conn and Gelina will be faced with love and hate, passion and destruction...but only love will heal them both...

Even after all of these years, Lady of Conquest is still an emotional and exhilerating ride. From the moment he realizes who Gelina is, Conn struggles not only with his gut wrenching desire for her, but the deep emotions filling his heart. How can he reconcile the murderous waif with the beautiful young woman she has become? And when Gelina herself betrays him, it is the ultimate test to his love and honor. Gelina herself struggles not only with her love for Conn, but for that of her brother, Rodney. Did Rodney truly lie to her about Conn? Who is she to believe? (And I thought I tortured my characters!!!) Despite the fact I absolutely love Conn and Gelina and their struggle to find love and happiness together, my favorite character has always been Nimbus, the jester. He is funny, wise and sweet, and his ultimate fate is heart breaking. It is no wonder this book has a special place on my keeper shelf...

Romance Reviews: Howling at the Moon by Karen MacInerney

Sophie Garou has it all: she's an auditor at a top accounting firm in Austin, her boss is considering her for partnership, she has clothes to die for, and she has a gorgeous lawyer boyfriend who could be a GQ Cover Model and wants to marry her. She only has one tiny, teeny problem...she's a werewolf. Not to mention, her mother is a physic witch who owns the Sit A Spell new age store. Life is good, as long as Sophie drinks plenty of wolfsbane tea (which prevents her from changing at the most inconvenient moments), she constantly shaves her legs, stays away from the other werewolves living in Austin (thankfully the werewolf population is small), and she's able to escape a couple of days a month for the full moon.

In fact, everything is just peachy until she arrives at work one day to find a strange care package waiting for her. The problem? Besides the awful poetry, somebody knows what she is and is threatening to expose her. As if that weren't bad enough, Sophie gets a phone call from one of the employees at the Sit A Spell..her mother has been arrested for the murder of Ted Brewster, a city councilman. Her mother might be a little crazy but she certainly isn't a murderer. Sophie figures the day can't get any worse, when on the way to the courthouse, she comes face to face with her first werewolf sighting in Austin. And what a werewolf! He's a gorgeous Norse god with long blond hair, piercing amber eyes and a body that makes her drool. She knows instant lust, it hits her like a ton of bricks. And he sees her! Which means if he's a part of a pack, then lone wolf Sophie is in big trouble.

Why do the police think Sophie's mom killed Brewster? Because the Love Potion he purchased from Sit A Spell, poisoned him. But Sophie knows her mother is too good of a witch to make such a terrible mistake. In fact, Sophie's mom comes from a long line of Romanian gypsy witches, and her potions and spells are her legacy--one that Sophie doesn't share. After bailing her mother out, Sophie and her best friend, Lindsey, decide to join her mother's séance in hopes of bringing Brewster's ghost back from the other side and find out who really killed him. Depending on your point of view, it goes better than expected, Brewster does come back, but Sophie doesn't understand his clues--apparently he doesn't know who killed him... Still something is better than nothing, especially when Sophie has to come up with the real murderer and fast. And who should show up at her mother's store? THE werewolf! Not only is he as drop dead gorgeous up close and personal, but he definitely remembers Sophie. Tom Fenris is one yummy bad boy...er wolf and now Lindsey wants to date him. Problem is, having been abandoned by her father when she was just a pup, Sophie has no idea if Tom plans to take Lindsey out to dinner, or eat her for dinner.

Where is Sophie the day of the full moon? In Austin. First she has to give a presentation to a potential new client interested in the accounting firm, and Sophie's boss will except nothing short of her death to get out of the meeting. Then, Sophie's boyfriend has planned a romantic dinner to celebrate the anniversary of their first date, and he won't take no for an answer. What is a werewolf to do? Take lots and lots and lots of wolfsbane tea, which has the unfortunate side of effect of giving Sophie a rubber tongue, hot flashes, and hallucinations. Not to mention, Sophie isn't any closer to figuring out who murdered Brewster, nor does she know who's sending those atrocious care packages... Will Sophie ever get her mom off the hook? Will she stop whoever is threatening to expose her wild side? And how will she ever cope with her fierce attraction to Tom when Lindsay's dating him?

Howling at the Moon by Karen MacInerney is a fast paced, sassy ride with plenty of laugh-out-loud humour. Sophie maybe young, attractive, and a real go-getter, but she's also a werewolf. And though she tries hard to ignore her wolfy nature, it keeps coming back to bite her in the ass. Heath is her human boyfriend, who hasn't a clue that she gets hairy on the full moon, and she wants to keep it that way. Tom is one hot, hot, HOT werewolf, with a mysterious past and a deep interest in Sophie. But Sophie wants nothing to do with him despite the searing kisses they share. I loved getting to know Sophie Garou and all her foibles. The writing is strong and flowing, and the ending left me wanting more. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Keep them coming, Ms. MacInerney!

History Shorts: 1066, Conquest of England

It is widely agreed upon by historians that the year of ten sixty-six and the Norman conquest forever changed the future of England. We can only imagine how England might have developed had King Harold Godwineson survived and defeated the invading Norman army at Hastings. If the Anglo-Saxons had been allowed to develop on their own, what sort of country would England be today? The Normans did more than change the face of England, they brought with them new technology, skills and ideals that had never before been introduced to the Englisc people. They built fortresses out of stone to better suppress the Englisc. Brought warriors with the ability to fight mounted on mighty warhorses, which were able to defeat the elite Saxon warriors known as the Huscarles. They brought forth the feudal system which suppressed every Englisc man, woman and child, while turning the Normans into the ruling class. French became the language of the Nobility and Englisc that of the peasants, widening the gap between the rich and the poor. But not even Duke William of Normandy had wanted to rule England with an iron fist.

It had been William's dream from the first to rule England peacefully, for at an early age he had become fascinated by her rich, fertile soil and her quaint people with their lilting tongue. He had wanted to hunt in their forests, to rule their land as their king, and to learn their ancient language. Almost as if he thought to retire from the warring, grasping Barons of Normandy. It is not known for sure if King Edward the Confessor did indeed promise the throne to Duke William years earlier. However, William's dream was closer to realization as it had never been before when he ransomed an oath from Harold Godwineson upon his capture. Harold swore he would give the throne to William upon King Edward's death. But it all turned to ashes when the Confessor died, and Harold was proclaimed king by the witan—the council of elders—only hours after the Edward's death.

We can only guess how furious William the Bastard must have been when he heard the news of the death of King Edward and the coronation of the new King of England in the same message. Perhaps he still hoped that some how he would have a chance to rule it's green shores peacefully for he sent several messengers to King Harold, no doubt to remind him of the oaths he had sworn to the duke. All of his wishes to rule England peacefully died when in desperation to raise an army, William offered England as booty to every Baron, knight and mercenary who would fight for his cause. Yet perhaps the most powerful and cunning stroke of all his planning was the messenger sent baring gifts to the Pope, Alexander II, asking him to judge as to who was the true heir and successor to the Englisc throne. It is believed that not a single shred of truth was debated, nor was Harold called upon to send his own representative. For the Pope gave his blessing to William and with it, the duke's greatest tool, the papal banner. To all who set eyes upon it, it clearly stated that the Pope and even “God” was in support of Duke William and his campaign. It is this very tool that is believed to have crushed the fighting spirit of King Harold Godwineson.

King Harold had already displayed his military prowess when he received the message that King Harald Hardrada of Norway, and his own brother Tostig, had landed near the great northern city of York with a host of Vikings determined to take the crown for themselves. Harold luckily had been at the capital at the time and immediately rallied an army and set forth from London to York in a march that took him only five days, covering over two hundred miles to reach his foe at Stamford Bridge—marching day and night without stopping. It was an amazing feet, and when he finally reached Stamford Bridge to meet his enemy, his army had swelled in size for he had recruited every available man from every village the fyrd had passed along the way. The Vikings were so impressed by the Englisc army that it is recorded that it looked like a “plain of ice from the sun glinting off their weapons.”

Harold was very much the diplomat just as his father had been, and before the battle he offered his brother the Earl Tostig peace and one third of the kingdom if he would surrender now, but to the Vikings he offered only death. Tostig declined and so the fighting began. It was ferocious as it could only be with thousands of men fighting hand-to-hand combat. The Englisc pushed the Norsemen across the bridge and into the river. Seeing that his Vikings were loosing, King Harald became filled with the berserker spirit and enraged, plowed into the ranks of the fyrd, slaughtering Engliscmen left and right, until in the end, he himself was brought low, killed by an arrow in the throat. The fighting stopped then and once again King Harold Godwineson offered peace to Tostig and the remaining Norsemen, but they would not have it. The fighting continued into the evening and in the end the Viking army was annihilated. It was while the Englisc and their King were celebrating their victory at York that they received the message that Duke William and his Norman army had landed at the town of Pevensey.

In another amazing feat, Harold marched his army straight from York to Caldbec Hill near the town of Hastings were the Norman army had marched and conquered. The King's army was now smaller, but there were still many counties who had not been affected by the invading Norsemen nor the Normans and would have been easy to call upon. But something happened to Harold between his victorious battle at Stamford and his total defeat at Hastings. It is not known for sure but it is believed that the Papal banner is what brought the Englisc King so low. Perhaps he felt guilty at having broken an oath to the Duke, no matter that it had been given under duress, for now it appeared that the Pope and even God was against him.

The Englisc took the defensive position upon the Senlac ridge, effectively cutting off the route to London. It was a good position, but no battle can be won without an offensive attack. And yet none ever came. The English stood defending the ridge against the continuous onslaught of the attacking Normans, but never once did they charge upon the invaders. The fyrd of eight thousand strong began to diminish in size. It is said that lines of the Englisc were so thick and deep that even those who had died by the hail of Norman arrows were held up by their brethren even after death. Their lines were finally broken and scattered by the repeated attacks of the mounted knights. It is not exactly clear how Harold died, for the only records left to us come from the Normans. According to the Bayeux Tapestry, the King was blinded by an arrow in the eye, and then viciously hacked to death by William himself and three other of his closest men. And there at the Battle of Hastings died the last Saxon King of England.

Even after the victory at Hastings and the defeat of Harold, it was still no easy task for William to conquer England for he and his men were waylaid by dysentery. It has been speculated that the Englisc could have many times stopped the invading foreigners, with more battles or guerrilla warfare, for there were many Englisc warriors that had not been killed at either battles and yet it was as if the spirit of the whole people of England had been defeated by the death of their king and the papal banner. After the ravishment and destruction of Romney and Dover, the great cities of Cantabury and Winchester surrendered to the Duke without a fight, as did most of Kent, Sussex, Wessex and East Anglia. London was now all that lay between William and victory. And after effectively cutting it off from the rest of England by a path of devastation that circled the countryside around the great city, it too finally surrendered. Though William was crowned King of England on Christmas day, he had yet to fully conquer the entire country, for the north remained untouched.

In the end, England became more trouble than it was worth. Though the Duke had conquered it with relative ease, he continually had to contend with the Englisc that rebelled in the north, and even his own barons, angry with his laws, rose up against him time and time again, until he spent as much time in Normandy as he dared. He gave up hope of ever learning the Englisc tongue and could no longer stand spending his time with a people who hated him with a passion. William died in Normandy, begging forgiveness for all the violence and death he had visited upon the Englisc people.
By ten eighty-six, over two hundred thousand Normans, French, and Flemish had settled in England becoming the ruling class, while over three hundred thousand Engliscmen had been killed by their oppressors. The dark age for the Anglo-Saxons had only just begun and would continue for several hundred years more, because of one man's obsession.

Romance Reviews: The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran

Emmaline Martin didn't know what to expect when she entered Anglo-Indian Society to marry her betrothed. It certainly wasn't to find her reputation already in tatters because she'd had the nerve to survive a terrible incident that drowned her mother and father, and everyone else on board ship. For a day she clung to debris, and was rescued by a freighter filled with Irish sailors kind enough to deliver her to Bombay. And she certainly didn't expect to find her once kind and honorable betrothed, Colonel Lindley, disgusted with not only the fact she survived in such a scandalous manner, but everything about her: from her forthright speaking to her vibrant and bold art and sketches of unladylike subjects. It seems the Colonel also has a penchant for the ladies and carries on his affairs right beneath her nose. But she most certainly did not expect anything from him...Julian Sinclair, Lord Holdensmoor and the future Duke of Auburn—not kindness, not kisses, and certainly not saving her life.

Julian Sinclair doesn't know what he's doing at the party. Because of his mixed heritage, one quarter Indian and three quarters English, he's not wanted on either side. The British consider him a traitor, and the Indians a shame, and neither one are willing listen. Something is very wrong in the humid Delhi air. Rumors are circulating amongst the Indian peoples—in a nearby city, handful of the Indo-solders rebelled against their English commanders. The very streets of Delhi rumble with unease, and yet the stubborn English refuse to listen to reason. He might as well leave...until he spots her. Miss Emmaline Martin who has the misfortune of being betrothed Julian's boorish cousin, Colonel Lindley. An odd sort of beauty, she's nothing like any lady he's met. The day Emma intends on leaving the brutish Lindley with the help of Julian, is the day all hell breaks loose in Delhi. The dire warnings Julian spouted have come true, the Indian troops are rebelling and their killing the English—men, women, and children. It is only by chance that Emma is rescued by Julian, and as they try to escape the bloodshed, they save each other from certain death. Escaping into the desert, they make their way to safety, avoiding the Indians soldiers at all costs. But somewhere along the way, Emma falls in love with Julian—with his quiet strength, his gentle touch, and his fierce gaze. Then Julian leaves her with friends—he must return to Delhi to see to his mother's family, and promises he will return to her, and together they will leave for England. Emma wants to beg him not to go, for deep in her heart, she fears she will never see him again...Julian never returns.

Four years have passed since the fateful day Julian learned of Emma's death. Four long and dreadful years spent in England's autocratic Society as the Duke of Auburn. And still he cannot forget, cannot stop the guilt from overwhelming him. He should have never left her, should have stayed with her and taken to England himself. When his fiance takes him to art showing, Julian is shocked when he is faced with paintings depicting the mutiny in India. So terrible in their reality, the paintings speak to him deeply. But no less shocking when he turns to find his beloved Emmaline is alive. Alive! He cannot believe it. Yet by the pain in her eyes, she knew all along where he was, knew he was in England but never came to him. She thought he had abandoned her when it is the farthest from the truth. But when Emma's life his threatened, Julian swears to protect her at all cost...not only protect her, but prove to her that he never forgot her, and never stopped loving her.

The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran is a richly woven tapestry of love, passion, and tragedy. Beautifully written, Ms. Duran's eloquent prose pulls you into the story until you find yourself standing along side Julian and Emma in the humid heat of India. It is a wonder to watch as Emma blossoms from a awkward flower to a beautiful woman under Julian's care. And Julian, freed to be the man he truly is deep inside in Emma's arms. Even the sadness which follows their tragic departure and return four years later is a wonder to behold. Emma, now scarred by the horrors of the mutiny, and Julian rendered an empty shell of a man, tugs at the heart. Colourful and darkly gritty, The Duke of Shadows is one of the best debut novels I have read in a long time, and I look forward to devouring more romances by Meredith Duran. Highly Recommended.

Shelley Mosley/Deborah Shelley: he coolest thing that’s happened to me since being published is meeting lots of other writers. I’ve never met such a bunch of creative people!

I write as Deborah Shelley with Deborah Mazoyer. Our novels are in Dutch, Danish, French, Russian, Norwegian, Portuguese, and large type. Carrie Lofty: I had a book signing at my local RWA chapter (Chicago North) in December when What a Scoundrel Wants was released. Here are women I've been friends with for years lining up for me to sign their copies. That really freaked me out, in the best way. Their support and enthusiasm for my success really touched me, and I certainly never thought I'd have people queuing up.

Born in California, raised in Indiana, Carrie found the love of her life in England. What a Scoundrel Wants, the hot, adventurous tale of Will Scarlet and his dangerous lady love, was a 12/08 Zebra Debut. Scoundrel’s Kiss will follow in 01/10, featuring a warrior monk and an opium addict.

And when I joined my local RWA chapter after moving, one of the women said “Oh My God! I’ve read your books!” That was a total squee surreal moment for me.

Ingela F. Hyatt: I think there's a tie regarding the coolest thing that's happened to me... First was when I received my "author copies" of A Knight of Passion (copies of your book included in the contract with your publisher). I couldn't believe that the book I was holding in my hands had actually been written by me. It was such a surreal feeling, especially after striving so many years to be published and suffering so many rejections, it was humbling. And the other cool thing, was when I received an email from a reviewer who'd stayed up late to finish reading A Knight of Passion. And instead of going to sleep afterwards, she emailed me saying how much she absolutely loved my book. It was such a thrill to know my book had touched her as deeply as it had me (and yes, she gave me 5 stars and a recommended read). There is nothing like "fan" mail.

Michele Stegman: I was doing a book signing when a little girl about 8 came up to the table. She asked, "Did you write these books?" I said, "Yes!" She looked around the bookstore wide-eyed and asked, "ALL of them?"

Michele Stegman has always loved history. She lives in a 170 year old log cabin, spins, weaves, makes her own soap, but still enjoys the modern conveniences of computers to write her historical and contemporary romances.

EElizabeth Sinclair: I have to say the day I met a little old lady in the book section of Walmart, and she recognized my name and began rattling off the titles in my backlist of Harlequin/Silhouette books. It was the very first time I was recognized by my name and not the title of one of my books. Then she had me autograph her electric bill so she could prove to her reading buddies that she'd really met me.

I’ve written over a dozen novels for Harlequin/Silhouette, Kensington, and Medallion Press. My husband and I live in St. Augustine, FL with our two “furry children” -- Ripley, a collie, and Lily, a Golden Retriever. Current releases – Angel Unaware and Burning Secrets. Kelley Heckart: I have to say that I thought being an author would be way more boring than when I played in an all-girl hard rock band, but I have met just as many weird and interesting people at my book signings. One guy I remember talked non-stop about the earth's magnetic core and aliens. He made my head spin. The coolest thing that happened was at a book signing last year. People who had read my first book came up to me and said they had to buy my next book. It was a great feeling.

Michelle Beattie: Finding out this week that Random House in Germnay bought the subrights to the first 3 books of my pirate series and knowing my books will be printed in German. I've never been there, don't speak the language. I think that's so cool!

I live in Alberta Canada, in an off-grid house run completely by solar power. I began writing shortly after coming back from my honeymoon.
I originally wrote westerns but fell in love with Pirates of the Caribbean and wrote my own pirate story, which became the first book I ever sold.

Question: What is the "coolest" or most interesting thing that has happened to you since becoming a published author?

Sherry Lewis: I would have to say serving on the board of directors of Romance Writers of America, especially the year I served as president. It was a fascinating experience for a lot of reasons. I learned a lot about the industry, I met many interesting people and visited interesting places, and I made incredible friends. I found sitting in board meetings with a group of intelligent, savvy, women who were all focused on the same thing and wanting the best for their organization invigorating. It was so cool to watch people disagree vehemently at the board table over an issue, but be adult enough and professional enough to realize that disagreeing didn’t have to become a personal issue. We’d argue -- er debate – and then put aside the issues and go to lunch. I greatly admire the women I served with on the board, as well as the members of RWA’s corporate staff. As an added bonus, I worked through some personal issues, like the fear of having my face plastered on the big screen during conference. And for the first time in my life, I can answer the question “what would you do if you didn’t write?” It may make me sound unbearably boring, but I was fascinated by the world of non-profit organizations.

Sherry is the multi-published author of contemporary and time-travel romance, and of traditional mystery. When she’s not writing or talking on the phone with her incredibly beautiful, intelligent and gifted grandchildren, she can be found teaching writing classes online.

Paty Jager: This sounds kind of morbid, but after a gathering for a relative's funeral, my daughter and I were starting to drive away after saying good bye to family. A lady came running out of the building waving her arms. We stopped and she leaned in the window. "Oh, my heavens, I didn't realize who you were until someone mentioned you're an author. I had to tell you your aunt has given me all your books, and I've loved every one of them."

Anna Kathryn Lanier: Having strangers tell me how much they enjoy my books. It's wonderful having strangers reinforce what you sometimes doubt, that you are a good writer.

Carrie Lofty: "So You Think You Can Dance"!! I love that show, and I watch the US, Canadian and Aussie versions each year. I used to compete in ballroom dancing in college, and I was an avid belly dancer for years--never anywhere near being properly trained, but I adore dancing. I enjoy the energy and honesty of the competitors, how much dance means to them. Each person fights so hard for what they dream of, which is simply inspiring.
